John Winthrop led the first Puritan migration in 1620.The Puritans came to escape religious persecution from the English Church. Some may think that they came for the purpose of changing the church completely, but that is not the case. They simply came to build churches and to spread their religion to everyone throughout the new colonies. In 1628, wealthy Puritans bought the Massachusetts Bay Colony from the Council of Plymouth. In 1630, Boston, Lynn, and Cambridge were founded. The Puritans did not like anyone that didn't agree with their religion especially the Quakers. The Quakers would intrude on Puritan meetings. Many of them were fined, whipped, imprisoned, banished, and even killed. Massachusetss had only one belief and that was the only one that was excepted.
Puritanism was the beliefs and practices of the Puritans who were Calvinists that wanted to "purify" the Church of England. They were known as religious fanatics, that devoted everything in their lives to religion. They had very strick Puritan laws throughout Massachusetts. Non-Puritans were allowed to live in the colony, but they were not allowed to participate in government. There were many punishments that were included if a person did not follow the laws. The Puritans wrote their laws based on what they believed was in the Bible. The clergy were the only people who weren't punished as severely as other Puritans. The punishments included: wearing a sign, branding, whipping(men only), dunking stool(women only), and public shaming. Theocracy was a type of government when a God or a deity is known as a ruler of the government and their laws are followed and interpreted by the authorities. The Puritans followed a theoratic government system. All in all, the Puritans established the Massachusetts Bay Colony and spread their religion and laws throughout the colonies.
